Century-Old Japanese Doll Maker’s Craft a Kimekomi Pikachu!

To celebrate the release of the new Pokemon game, Tokyo Mataro Doll, a company that’s been around since 1919, have chosen to craft their own special take on Pikachu. One of Japan’s oldest traditional doll makers, the Kimekomi doll originates from Kyoto where the first Kimekomi Ningyo Dolls can be traced back to the 1700s.

And it’s breath taking!

Made from, kimono cloth in a yellow satin material with a floral pattern. Each doll is handmade by Mataro without the the use of 3D printing or CAD. The doll is finished with red and white strings to symbolize good fortune and prosperity, and is complete with a golden folding screen, a stand, and wooden sign.

Size: 150mm x Depth 120mm x Height 157mm

From what I could find, there will only be 4 runs of these amazing Pikachus. Each run with have a quantity of 50 made, that’s a lot considering they are all made by hand. The first two runs have already sold out in Japan. With only an availability of 200 these dolls are going to be an exclusive collectors item.
